keith's conception - as most baby's are - was an accident. the young couple, stella being only seventeen and mark nineteen, found that there had been a hole in the condom. a month later, stella's pregnancy test came back positive. for stella, the news wasn't nearly as tragic as accidental pregnancies usually are; in fact, she was actually quite happy about it. she's always been a very maternal-like figure, ever since she was a little kid. she was ready to have a child of her own. mark, on the other hand, wasn't so sure about it. he remained faithful to stella through the pregnancy, and was even there to hold her hand during the birth. but when he first heard his newborn son crying, he fled the scene and disappeared. he wasn't seen again for many years to come.
stella and keith made it through the first few years of his life with little to no problems. they had her parents' plentiful income to help support them, food, and a roof over their heads; there wasn't much more a single mother could ask for. keith was an extremely bright child. he spoke his first word ("ba-ba") at only five months of age, and was speaking understandable sentences before his first birthday. by the time he was three, he could recite the alphabet and do simple addition problems. at age five, though, something happened that would change the course of his life. he was on his way home from preschool when he smelt something funny coming from the house that he was passing. running through the open gate into the back yard, he discovered a horrifying sight: a young boy completely engulfed in flames. thinking quickly, he ran and turned on the hose, putting out the fire, and when he realized that the boy wasn't moving, he ran next door and got someone to call 911. he didn't know it at the time, of course, but he had just saved the life of ryan mitchell, a boy who would soon become his everything.
he forced his mother to take him to the hospital every day after that, wanting to be there when ryan woke from his "really long nap." when he finally did come to, keith was sitting right beside him, and the very first thing he said was, "you glowed just like a firefly~!" clearly not understanding the magnitude of the situation. a close friendship sparked between them after that, and they were besties all through grade school. when he entered junior high, keith began to discover a few emotions he hadn't felt before. all of a sudden he was paying much more attention to the girls he'd known for years. but there was a twist. the very same emotions he felt for these girls... he found himself also gearing towards ryan. but it wasn't right, he told himself. his entire life, he'd been taught: mary and stu, not gary and stu. but as those three years of junior high passed, he found it was inevitable: he was falling in love with ryan, and there was nothing he could do to stop it. he knew he had to keep it a secret; fly (as was his personal nickname for the boy) didn't like boys. he would think keith was a freak if he found out! so he hid his feelings deep down.
keith never knew if ryan was a master or a servant. the younger boy kept that little piece of information hidden away until a few days before keith would go into high school, and be separated from ryan. he was furious to know that he'd have only a few days to say goodbye to his best friend, and secret love. and so, keith left him on bad terms. on their very last day together, he yelled at ryan, calling him a bad friend and telling him that he hoped he got an abusive master. he's never forgiven himself for this outburst. he prays that one day he'll meet up with fly again. he's sworn to himself that on that day, he'll apologize and spill all his feelings.
keith tried to move on after ryan. he made new friends, but never did he fall for anyone else. ryan was his first love, and would remain his only love; he was determined to find him again one day. in his junior year, keith came home from school to a very surprising sight. his father was standing in the front room with his mother. he'd seen pictures of the man, but never met him. running inside, he exclaimed, "dad!" but when the man looked over, his gaze was hard. "keith." he acknowledged, his voice cold. "don't call me that." taken aback, keith's eyebrows furrowed. wasn't his father happy to see him, after all these years...? but mark left only minutes after keith arrived, saying to stella, "don't ever call me again." this broke keith's heart. he'd longed for a father his entire life, and just as fast as his hope had sparked, it'd been crushed.
when keith turned eighteen, he expected to be assigned a servant, just as all his friends were. but instead, he was told by the school counselor that he needed to contact a government official. when he did, he was informed that his assigned servant had died unexpectedly of a blood clot in her heart. they told him that he would be assigned a different servant, should he want one, and he told them that yes, he did. eight years have passed since that phone call, but finally, an official called him back and told him that a new servant has been found for him. he doesn't know who it is, but he plans to treat them not as a servant, but as a friend. he wants to make them forget the "s" on their wrist, and help them live life to its fullest.
