please note that when masters and servants begin to attend high school, they are ripped away from their families and go to separate classes that specialize in the area they have been designated to.
masters and servants are normally paired with each other at age eighteen, but sometimes ages will vary. most of the time, the two parties will learn about their master in the form of a letter sent by the government. sometimes, the letters are received many years after eighteen -- there is no set date.
children who move into the city that are under six years of age are automatically branded.
the masters !
the masters, it seems, have it the most well off in this new-age city. they are the ones that are completely in control of their servants. masters are allowed to have whatever job or profession they choose -- though both they and servants are allowed to go to school, masters gain a bit better of an education than other servants. every single important political figure in boston is a master, and they all work hard to keep their alternate lifestyle a secret from other cities, states, and countries. masters are chosen to become what they are at birth, and they are given an M tattoo on their wrist to signify what group they belong to. they are predestined to have a certain servant, and masters are not allowed to choose said servant. most masters seem to treat their servants fairly and justly, but more and more instances have arisen where masters treat their servants more like slaves than people, which has caused the rebellions to begin.
the servants !
the servants are the lowest of the low when it comes to social standing. servants have only one job -- their goal is only to keep their master happy and be in good standings with them and their relations. they are not allowed to have jobs or be extremely social -- when it is necessary for them to venture into the outside world, they are required to cover up their S tattoo given to them at birth with a piece of gauze or a bandage. their masters are normally the extent of contact they have with other people, but if a master is gentle enough to allow their servants to roam around, they do quite freely. they normally socialize with other "freed" servants rather than other masters, however. they have little to no freedom, but many servants are quite happy with the way they live. they are given free food, shelter, and in most instances, a kind master and a new family. however, because of the treatment masters have given to servants lately, more and more rebellions have begun to rise. free thinking servants have become more and more common, and those that refuse the orders of their masters are growing more and more vocal.
the tourists !
the tourists are the oblivious ones. they can smell something fishy in boston, but they either turn their heads or are too thick to realize what exactly is going on. many, however, are trying to piece together what's happening -- why is half of the population unemployed? what's with all of these M tattoos they keep seeing everywhere? many tourists are politicians from other states or countries, which makes the job of the masters much harder to keep their servants out of the limelight. tourists fill many jobs here, but they are either temporarily here or they have moved from another state -- those that have been born here all know of the terrible, dark secret that the city hides in its underbelly.
